Round 1 Lanna 10 Oct 2011

Friday, 21 October 2011

Presentation Night at Miguels was a success on a fine night allowing us all, 70+ members & families to be out in the garden with so much food we could not eat it all. Overall we can consider the tournament a success as well with four rounds of golf on a good range of courses at reasonable prices and considering it is wet season most rounds were completed in fine weather. The Committee was considered to have done a good job and were thanked accordingly.

The overall winners were:

Net Men - Len Sparrow
Net Women - Ram Taylor

Low Gross - Guy Merrett

Best Stableford - Steve Jepson
A Grade - Jack Cooper
B Grade - Archie Lee
C Grade - Lennart Larsson

The NAGA award was presented to the golfer with the Highest overall Net score present on the night who just happened to be: Frank Schwarz. Moral of the story is to never, never attempt to change your regular stance, grip & swing just before an annual tournament.

The winner of the Knockout Comp run & presented by Mr.B was also awarded his prizes -Nigel Jones

Nearest the Pins:
Tom Berger
Ram Taylor
Lennart Larsson
Frank Schwarz
Mr.B.Lucassen
Jack Cooper
Alex Stewart
Hiro Namekawa

Congratulations to all concerned.

Final Round - Highlands 20 Oct 2011

There we were 35 golfers (9 groups) on a fine day at Highlands with everyone checked in early and ready to go off both tees when the starter comes up and tells us we can all go off the 1st early. Can you believe it would happen to us on two courses in the one tournament. Anyway after physically dragging people to the 1st tee we did actually all get away earlier than we would have off both tees, so alls well that ends well (I think). The weather was good and the course was beautiful, at 6287 yds the course was about 600yds shorter than Lanna players are used to but 280 yds longer for Maejo players. If you only play the one course the 880 yds is sure to make a difference in handicaps. At the end of the day it was Steve J with 41 pts, Len S with 40 pts, Lennart L with 39 pts and Mr.B with 38 pts who collected the prize with smiles all round.

Note: Hazard Warning - Highlands hole #11. If you hit into the houses and break a tile it is a fine of 455baht. One of our number hit a ball out of bounds on this hole and after the game a lady came to the restaurant to confront him. "It could not have been me" he says, "I have a large letter 'K' on my ball" She presented him with a ball suitably marked - no argument - he paid the fine...

Presentation Night at Miguels starting from 7pm Friday 21 Oct. See You There. Get yourselves a table outside if the weather is fine and if not, inside or at least under the outer cover. Food will be served but pay for your drinks at the bar.

Highlands 20 Oct 2011

We have been advised by Highlands starter that we are the only group going off both tees tomorrow and the course is very busy so groups coming off 10 to play off the 1st tee may have a delay of a few minutes and we should be aware of this and to please be understanding.

Round 3 - Maejo Tuesday 18 October, 2011

There were 9 groups and 31 golfers at Maejo today hitting off both tees for the third round of the Annual Tournament, apparently the weather put a few off as some of our 4 balls turned into 3 balls because of no-shows. But there were still plenty to enjoy the day and the course which as usual was in great condition. Yes, there was a bit of moisture about but many enjoyed the overcast conditions with a slight breeze and it was a pleasure to play in the cool rather than the heat for a change. The winners of the stableford competition on the day were Archie Lee & Len Sparrow both playing to their handicaps with 36 points, Ram Taylor came in second with 35 points and Alex Stewart & Lennart Larsson came in third with 34 points. Well done everybody and we will see you again on Thursday at Highlands.

Round 2 Gold Canyon thurs 13 Oct 2011

Another good turnout (10 groups 39 golfers) in hot/humid weather but thankfully no rain. The course was in excellent condition with fast but true greens. Most people were there nice and early and with no one else on the course we could have teed off early. With 5 groups each playing off Tee 1 & 10 the majority agreed that the back nine was the hardest, however some enjoyed considerable success, especially new member Nee scoring a 'hole in one' and Gary Lyon nearly repeating his 'hole in one' effort on the same hole as last year (was it an inch or a yard?) as well as a rumour flying around the course that Ram Taylor had also holed out but this turned out to be just a 'birdie'. Of course there were some horror stories as well with several people hitting the wrong ball and suffering resultant penalties not to mention a ball stuck up a tree and another 'never say die' golfer taking a mud bath. A problem arose with the 'nearest the pin' markers when one person forgot to put the marker out on the front 9 and another marker being removed after the 'hole in one' (not in the tournament) on the back nine - so the committee decided to have four 'nearest the pin' prizes in the next round at maejo.

There were some great scores on the day with the winners being Kieran & Phyllis who both killed the course with Net 69/39 points and placings for Ram T 36pts and Steve J 35pts along with a few honourable mentions Mr.B 34pts, Guy, Ben & Lennart 33pts. Congratulations go to all and commiserations to the rest.

It must be said that while the course and facilities were in excellent condition the meal after the game left a lot to be desired and the committee will have to consider if this is worth while in the future.

Round 1 - Lanna Mon 10 Oct 2011

A big turnout for the first round of the Tournament with 11 groups ready, willing but not necessarily able, due to the starter having a change of heart about our tee-off arrangements, certainly made for an interesting start to the day.  But all groups were away off the 1st on course 1 by 9:30am under cloudy skies and all had completed their rounds and were in the clubhouse by 2pm without any rain. After all the recent rains it has to be said that we were very fortunate that the rain kept away and it was even heard said that Lanna was in as good a condition as it gets all year.

Only one person playing under par and one playing to par meant that it was not easy out there but with two tied for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places some were equal to the challenge and willingly accepted their monetary gains with smiles all round. Well done Hiro, Len, Sherman, Archie, Jack & Steve. The winners of the nearest the pins at each course will be announced at the prize presentation at Miguels.

Friday, 7 October 2011

Currently there are 42 golfers in this years tournament. Must be some sort of record for the club. All indications are that there will be a very large group at Lanna on Monday so please be early and get your cards in to the committee immediately so that groupings can be organised for Tee-Off. Please comply to this advise at all venues for the tournament.

For those who have not played Lanna in a while it may be pertinent to mention that on hole 6 the waste area to the left of this hole including the drain has now been marked OB. We are playing courses 1 & 2.

With such a large group please be considerate of others with etiquette and the speed of play, 'ready golf'' should be the order of the day and vacate the greens as quickly as possible. But please remember to enjoy your round of golf - Sure it's serious and you do need to concentrate and follow the rules but most of all do Be Happy.

The leading group will mark the 2 par 3's for 'nearest the pin'. The ball must be on the green to be in contention. Tailing group will collect the markers.

Please ensure your cards are marked correctly, totalled up with readable gross/net/stableford scores and signed by player and marker and handed to the committee promptly on completion.

The handicap groupings for the runners-up prizes in the various grades for the tournament are as follows:
A Grade 8-19, B Grade 20-29, C Grade 30-39

Monday, 5 September 2011
